OK, retry.
I think easiest would be to use the geometry package:
\usepackage[paperwidth=5.5in,paperheight=8.5in,pdftex]{geometry}
The 'pdftex' option makes sure the paper dimensions are not only used for
typesetting, but are also explicitly written out into the pdf itself.
