The Sacred Harp, 1991 Edition (which is the dominant 4-shape tunebook) uses dots for extenders .. see the page at the link below.  Not sure whether you all consider the Sacred Harp Publishing Company as a "reputable publisher", but for a chunk of your user base, it's the gold standard.

A feature request.  This will be more readily accepted
if they are accompanied by a scanned image from a reputable music publisher showing what the alternative
forms of the extender line should look like.
