If chop marks are the desired output, there's another way of doing it as described in the LilyPond Snippetsdocument.  Just do a search on Rhythmic slashes. It the rs function overrides a quarter note rest for quarter note marks.  You can replace the r4 with an appropriate rest for other durations.
