Yup!  If you don't like the annotations right on the grobs and would rather 
have them overhead, this allows you to do :

\override FootnoteItem #'annotation-line = ##f
\footnoteGrob #'NoteHead #'(0 . 0) \markup { } \markup { \super * foo } a4^"*"
