You will need to either: (a) identify the melody as a distinct voice
within the piano part (and then associate the lyrics with that voice),
or (b) give explicit rhythm to the lyrics.

You could probably also do some kind of chicanery to have the melody
present, invisibly, but I think the above two approaches are probably
the best bets.  Option (a) will only work if the melody is actually
present in the piano part; if not, then (b) is your best or only option.
