I have always used sudo in order to install with the LilyPond script
(on Ubuntu).

  sudo sh lilypond-2.14.0-1.linux.x86.sh

and it installs lilypond in  /usr/local/lilypond
The bin PATH is  /usr/local/bin/lilypond
