I need to shift a few notes in a lower voice to the right.

These don't work:

\override NoteColumn #'force-hshift = #1

\voiceOne \stemDown \voiceOn[n[n]]

Is there a way which works?

Try using

\override NoteColumn #'force-hshift = #-0.01

or some other small amount of horizontal shift to the upper voice.
