I knew this.
The point in my case is really not have predefined strings but to have a 
class of strings (i.e. a style sheet). So I can enter the actual strings 
in the music but have them formatted centrally (for example to group 
instrument names and performance instructions separately, or to print 
instrument names bold while editing and normal for the publication ...)

But I think I can work now.
