Yes, it works for me with other unicode symbols too. Maybe the problem
is not using a text editor that supports it. For instance, jEdit does
not support unicode.

Of course it does. Select Utilities / Global Options /Encodings and set default character encoding to UTF-8 (or any other unicode encoding you want).
