Got almost there:

    f8[ g a c] | g4. \tieDown d8 ~ | <<
      {  \stemOff d4 s }
      \new Voice { \stemUp g8[ a bes d] }
    >>
    \stemUp

Where

stemOff = { \once \override Staff.Stem #'transparent = ##t }

But it seems that stemOff is making the stem white for the other two 
voices :-/ as can be seen in attach...
