IMHO harmonic-mixed and  \set harmonicDots = ##t should be the default!

But I remember at least three different ways notating harmonics for
the guitar in common notation (i.e not with tabulature) in printed
editions.

Does anyone know what Gould has to say about it?

She says (p.384) that whole and half note harmonics should have open noteheads, shorter values black noteheads.
