vertical spacing of scripts attached to spacer rests

I have a passage something like the following. I want to get the last bowing
to display vertically as if it were attached to a note at the same staff
position. Any ideas?

  a1\downbow  % without this line, an error occurs?

    { a1 }
    { s2\upbow s2\downbow }
