You can centre text above a bar line using a rehearsal mark; see http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.15/Documentation/notation/bars#rehearsal-marks
 
As to the issue with the rest: it seems to me that lilypond is doing the right thing here: a rest _is_ just the rectangle: the line comes from a ledger line.  Removing some of the lines from the score prevents this appearance from happening.

  \override MultiMeasureRest #'staff-position = #-0.05

This looks pretty good and it will do. Although I still feel as if the correct positioning (with a small horizontal line) will look more logical and elegant. 

But I remain with my main issue:

- How do I add text which is aligned with certain barlines? This is quite common for  percussion notation to indicate which line represents which (part of an) instrument. In my case: which part of a gong to strike (center, mid or edge).  
 
Anyone got a clue where to start looking? I don't mind doing some research: just can't seem to find a starting point. Thank you and all the best,
