regular bar numbers, or measure counter engraver?

Hi all,

I would like measure numbers to appear centered in each measure, at the bottom 
of my orchestral score.

Can I accomplish this with "regular" measure numbers, or do I need the new 
"Measure_counter_engraver"?
If the latter, how close is that to being part of the standard compiled 
application? (n.b. I'm always on the most recent development version available 
for download.)
