Liypond is so powerful and versatile that the initial learning process is 
daunting. However as a recent convert I strongly recommend
that you pay close attention to the structure and philosophy which is 
significantly different from the likes of Sibelius, Finale,
Noteworthy etc. Those programs given more weight to input and generally less to 
the output.

It will pay dividends to gain an early knowledge of the way Lilypond works and 
the scopes of various commands. There is a good
introduction but it is rather long and you can get lost in it and further study 
can suddenly introduce new concepts.

The main trouble with Lilypond is that it is so versatile so open to individual 
tweaks that it may seem daunting. You may find that
you want to use another program with a GUI to input the notes and Lilypond to 
produce the final score.

There may be troubles ahead but stick with it you will be rewarded.
