I had a feeling my observation wasn't original. Also, I rather
dodged the issue of whether convert-ly and the docs should
enforce/encourage a change to the proposed usage. Speaking just
for myself, changing of default reference pitch makes no
difference to me, as I always use an explicit reference pitch.
But I would not want to have convert-ly change any \relative's
with explicit reference pitches in my input files.

If convert-ly wants to change "\relative {}" to "\relative c'
{}", that's okay, but leave my explicit \relative's alone. :)
