Maybe an interface that's easier to remember?

\beforeBreak \shape ...
\afterBreak \shape ...
\shape ... (

with the ability to leave off any specification and/or use any order of
\shape commands.  Yes, that's clearly not 2.18 material.  But probably
worth thinking about.
