These are extremely clever (and nearly identical) solutions — thanks!

Now I just need to figure out why it messes up when moving it from this minimal 
snippet to my full titling system.
(It’s almost certainly an unintended effect of \with-dimensions…)
But this definitely puts me on the right track.
