Thank you! I'm quite surprised that I haven't seen this behaviour before
- the range of stuff I typeset is very limited, though (it is someone
else that has this problem).
I looked at the docs and the lsr under ties and only find the following
type of tweak 

\override TieColumn.tie-configuration =#'((-16.0 . -1))

which allows me to position the tie vertically and choose its direction.
But I can't trace anything to control the horizontal values of the end
points - is there something for that?

Another strange thing is that if I use \once before this construct it
fails to apply at all:

\once \override TieColumn.tie-configuration =   #'((-16.0 . -1)) a8 ~ a b ~ b

leaves the ties unmoved, while without the \once the ties are both
moved.

Ah, I missed this - is it possible to get a blog - or its titles - like
this emailed to oneself ? As with mutopia (where I never see it because
I only shop at IMSLP for scores) I never remember to look in these
places.
