I would say one thing: that in terms of consistency, LilyPond outperforms a 
number of earlier pieces of engraved music hands down.  I was having a look 
at the Augener version of "Six Shropshire Songs" by Butterworth and the ties 
in that would drive Janek round the bend.  Asymmetrical, not even level, no 
consistency where they start or finish.  I do think it's possible we're 
getting over-critical, just because computers can be so perfect.
