Wow, i ran into a good one my first try!  Thanks for the replies.  Yes, can see a little bit of the slur from the silent grace note, but it's a work around.

Good point!  It looks like if you just use \grace instead of \acciaccatura
that does the trick:

     \grace s8 c4 c c c
