You seem to equate ligatures with legato, I'd be interested to hear

This is what I did one in a time (\version "2.6.5"):
g1 \[ d \melisma
% this is a fake minor calor, together with the moved b4
\once \override TextScript #'extra-offset = #'( 0.9 . -1.8)
a'1*3/4^\markup{ \beam #0.9 #0 #0.5 }
\]
(found near the end of [1]).
The result was on page 7 (between 64 and 65) in [2].
