Andy,

The first thing is that Lilypond is not a Windows application like
Word. It is a compiler. It expects to "find" a text file, with
extension .ly and convert this to a music score as a .pdf file. If you
have such a file and drag and drop it on the icon it will be compiled.
However, I would recommend using the excellent (and also free)
Frescobaldi front-end editor---see <http://www.frescobaldi.org/>.

Also, and you'll get this a lot on this group---Read the manual, in
particular and first the Learning manual. I'd also read the Essay as
well, as it gives some background information. Find these, and the
other docs, at <http://lilypond.org/manuals.html>

It sounds like you need a converter program.Perhaps someone with more
knowledge of this can help out.
