Done!  The syntax is now

    \newInstrument name staff-settings voice-settings parent-name

with staff-settings and voice-settings being optional.  With these
changes, defining "ViolinI" instrument (assuming we already have a
"Violin" instrument) is simply

    \newInstrument ViolinI Violin

and this ROCKS! :D
