I think it's good to encourage users to look in the documentation.  I just want to note that in order to find this passage you have to know the keyword "tagline".  It's hard for a new user to know what to search for, so it seems legitimate to ask the OP's question.

He just told me that - as part of the paedagogical task - I should have _also_ referenced the manual.

Yes that's right, because that way we can get feedback about the documentation.

As to Knute's comment ' .... you have to know the keyword "tagline", that is true so if there is any way we can improve this then by referencing the document and then being told 'yes but ...' we could possibly now improve the Notation Reference somehow.
