RE: implicit tuplets

In my cheat sheet is:

\set tupletSpannerDuration = #(ly:make-moment 1 4)
\times 2/3 { p1 p2 p3 p4 p5 p6 . }

A search of the manual did not bring up anything.

Yes. Just enclose the whole triplets music in a \tuplet expression.
A first argument of 8 will tell LilyPond to group the triplets in groups of
an eighth note's length.
