Hi,

Why not Al -- le -- _ lu -- ia in spite of Al -- le -- e -- lu -- ia?
Is this notation from Schein?

Not quite sure what you're getting at there. Would a literal underscore
appear in the score? If so - why would you want one? ;)

No underscore in the score: see

http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.19/Documentation/notation/common-notation-for-vocal-music#multiple-notes-to-one-syllable

"A melisma can be defined entirely in the lyrics by entering a single underscore character, _, for every extra note that has to be added to the melisma."
