I can't help with your issue at all, but I'd want to mention the 
lilypond version predicates that are part of openLilyLib. These make it 
possible to conditionally execute code depending on the currently run 
LilyPond version. So if you don't just use it for your own purposes you 
can make it compatible with both 2.18 and current devel versions.
