Columns

I understand using \markup \left-column { this that }.

Is there a way to do that within a \tempo context?  Some of that Mahler 
has some long tempo markings.

Is there a way to put a glyph mixed with text into a column command? 
Unicode notes work, but they're very small and hard to see.
