I can't write rests, because he's playing. Therefor I use spacer rest with \startTextSpan and \stopTextSpan.
I don't know enough about your setup, but if you'd write \hide MultiMeasureRest it should make the rests invisible but still act as rests. Maybe this helps? Urs
