see my other post in the thread about Fedora: that bug is apparently related to a problem with recent fontconfig (which had wide-ranging consequences and breakages on my gentoo system).

No I think this thread is about another, long standing, issue.
The bug you are talking about is relatively new and more urgent: it should be fixed ASAP.
