In other words, people should use strings in double quotes in case
spaces are of importance, cf.
\markup { \italic { | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | } }
\markup { \italic "| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |" }
as shown in the attached image.
