Good recipe for numeric scale degree? (numerals with hat/caret)

I'm trying to reproduce output like this in LilyPond:

And can't find a good recipe for "numeral with caret" that looks as nice.  I've tried a simple \center-column, and I also tried the combining diacritical marks (unicode) and the results weren't as nice as something like above.

Any thoughts on how to get this right (and retain the baseline alignment across the row) would be appreciated.

For example, here's the combining diacritical solution:

I was hoping for a "small numeral" unicode character to pair with the caret used above, but I couldn't find a good substitute.  Ideally, there would be dedicated glyphs from the Music Notation codepage that handled this.  I presume that the TeX \hat { 2 } will look just as bad as the unicode-based solution?  Is there a way to put raw TeX in a \markup block?
