Why would that be desirable?

Well, speaking just for myself, I use roman numerals in \textI, \textII, ... \textVII which is rather clumsy and error-prone
(IV versus VI etc.)

This is just a convenience factor, but \text1 ... \text7 would be
nice, but I see that this leads to major problems in terms of
durations vs. variable calls.
