Recursion: See "Recursion".
To take the violin example,
violin = \new Staff {
\relative {
a'4 b c b
}
}
"violin" contains a "\new Staff { ... }" expression.
But "Staff" contains a "\relative { ... }" expression
and "relative" contains a music expression "a'4 b c b"
It's turtles all the way down :-)
