Hi David,

Indeed in the editions I saw the time is set as 4/4, but "Alla breve" is 
noted above the piece.

In the meantime I noticed that Bach uses cut C in his handwriting 
(thanks to Malte and Simon for the links). For me - but I am by no means 
competent in the matter - is still is odd to see cut C noted, and than 
not two, but four halves in each bar.

But I saw the tiny half-bar lines in the autograph Simon pointed to.

For me, the theoretical aspect is less important now. My aim was to have 
printed the 4/4 version in lilypond, since the choir I sing in is used 
to that edition.
