Thanks, that works a treat. I found 

\once\override Dots.dot-count = #0 r2.

for getting rid of the dots on the rest.

I guess it would be nice to make the numerals used in the time
signatures less 19th c looking as well. I was looking for some "font"
property that might help but found only this

not sure how to go on from there though. Any hints gratefully received!
