Ghost notes can be written with an x notehead, but are also often written as a notehead in parentheses. That’s why, apparently mysteriously, if you click the link in the NR index for ghost notes it takes you to parentheses, with no mention of ghosts.
 
For x noteheads:
 
\override Staff.NoteHead.style = #'cross

This could simply refer to ghost notes, usually written with x note heads ...
