John, if you want to start contributing to LilyPond you can start from 
here:
https://sourceforge.net/p/testlilyissues/issues/848/

The discussion on that issue is probably out-of-date, as homepage and 
news have changed recently. But still there's room for improvement.

Let us know if you need any help with building lilypond, tweaking 
texinfo or submitting a patch.
