I use Thunderbird too and for me I do actually see the code blocks without having to view-source at all.
Interesting. I wonder maybe it's something to do with HTML vs. plain? (See attached.)

Just thought I'd share my Thunderbird info if that helps - maybe you have a security setting / option enabled that blocks the blocks?

I don't think I have anything intentionally set here, it just appears. Hmm. Either way, plain text is of course the easiest :)
