Uh, no?

\slanted "one two three"

should likely give the same result as

\slanted \line { "one" "two" "three" }

but

\slanted { "one" "two" "three" }

is exactly equivalent to

{ \slanted "one" \slanted "two" \slanted "three" }

and is connected with unslanted spaces.
