Hi,

It seems that mail.freesoftware.fsf.org wasn't running correctly this
week, so I sent a message which apparently never arrived. I send it
again ->

Hi,

OK, I have made the few changes I needed to do, this includes:
- add the German translation of the GPL to langde.c
- edit the "Copyright" entry
- replace accents/special chars by their equivalent (ae, ue, oe, ss)
Additionnaly, I made minor changes to the translation, more precisely:
- "license" has been replaced by "Lizenz" in the "Informationen" screen.
There are still some minor problems in the translation, but I do not
think they are really worth paying too much attention. The only one I
can think off is a "too long" menu item in the "Optionen -> Grafik ->
erw. Optionen" menu, in the upper right part. Nobody seriously uses that
menu anyway 8-)

I have prepared a Windows and Linux binaries for German speaking people
to be able to try out the new translations. These are only work in
progress releases, the "official" 5.5.8 release will be published when
I'm sure everything's ready.

The binaries can be found here:
http://www.ufoot.org/archive/lw557cvs20021017w.zip
http://www.ufoot.org/archive/liquidwar-5.5.7cvs20021017.i386-pc-linux-gnu.tgz

Normally, under a German flavor of Windows, German language should be
activated automatically. If not, tell me ;-) Under Linux, the program
checks the environment var "LANG" for values like "de_??".

So the point is to toy with this release, and point out any ugly bug
that would stick in them -<;P

I join to this mail zipped versions of:
- langde.c (the file will all the menu contents)
- README.de (the German README file)

The README file is not completely translated. If you could have a look
at it Jan, it would be great. Basically, the important thing to
translate is the first paragraph, describing the game. It's important to
have a short description of the game for packages systems like RPM for
instance, or to provide informations to game sites - which are not
always in English 8-P The README file can IMHO have characters with
accents. It already has some BTW.

Additionnaly, I think I'll add a short couple of web pages in locations
like http://www.ufoot.org/liquidwar/fr/ or
http://www.ufoot.org/liquidwar/de/
These would be small partial translations of the web site with basic
informations such as:
- what's the game about
- how to toggle French/German menus
- quick links to downloadble files
- usefull things such as the mailing list address or the list of
  servers.
I currently have done these pages in French. Should you want to
translate them into German, I'd need to translate them in English
  first.
However, this last step is not done yet... Note that there's no
  problem
at all if you think this is too much work (about 40 lines of
  translation
I'd say). And BTW, my view of how should the German pages be is just a
suggestion. You might as well create your own content. Just let me
  know
  if you:
- wish to translate the French web pages (I would of course make an
  English translation first)
- do not really have enough time nor motivation to do it -> I'm
  pretty
much aware that Free Software projects *need* to be somewhat fun
  8-)
- think you've got inspiration and it's better if you write pages from
scratch. In this case, keep in mind that I only pubish "simple"
content on my web site, that's to say no fancy HTML but plain readable
text with minor enhancements such as bullet lists or titles.

I can obviously release German support within the game without
having a German section on my web site. The point in having a German -
even partial - translation of the site in German is that it's a lot
nicer to read when you come from a German speaking site. But as I just
said, it's absolutely not mandatory.

That's it for now.

Have a nice day.

Christian.
