gencat

        My system (Linux) doesn't have /usr/bin/gencat.  Is
        this going to be a problem?

Only if you want non-English error messages.  If you're happy with
English language error messages, just set USELOC to 0 like it says
in the makefile, and everything to do with gencat will be skipped
during compilation.
