Follow-up Comment #5, bug #27352 (project lwip):

The suggestion in comment#4 would be OK.  The only downside is that I find
such things much harder to reason about when looking at the code than a simple
type or structure, but I think code readability should take second place if
the performance change is as significant as suggested.
