Re comment #47:

I understand why the compiler warns and actually we are using the double cast
including void-pointers to silence the compiler's warnings where we know our
own alignment macros ensure correctness. However, I just don't understand why
there is no warning in the packed struct case.

My bad, I keep forgetting that. I shouldn't write code that way here, it's
kind of hard to read... ;-)
