Thanks for the suggestion to look at comp.lang.c. A quick search
pointed me to two interesting threads:

In short, they support my view that it's simply the vague wording of
the standard that threw me off. The people that wrote the
corresponding posts (Richard Heathfield, Peter Seebach) seem to know
what they are talking about.
