I hope you know I prefer discussing things on the list and 
bug/patch/task trackers than doing it privately.

But for several months, there has been nearly noone around to discuss 
things with. So instead of doing the development on my own without 
discussing anything, I discussed things with Dirk, yes. But the hope was 
there to only discuss things privately which are of so little impact 
that it shouldn't matter.

Things of impact still go through the official channels. Unfortunately, 
only some requests get answered there.

That private mail was from February. 6 days later, Dirk opened a task 
for it. So I guess this first private mail was to ask you (as PPP 
maintainer) what you thing about it. It should better have been open on 
the list, you're right about that.
