Follow-up Comment #1, bug #48964 (project lwip):
I've prototyped adding PBUF_POOL_SIZE to the sanity checks and setting it to 0
in my port. Attached is the patch for init.c
I also audited the LwIP source and only found netifs allocating from PBUF_POOL
(which is as expected), so it seems safe to set PBUF_POOL_SIZE to 0
