For what it's worth, we're using lwIP without any problems on various IP address ranges, including what you are referring to as Class B. We have a bunch of devices on a 172.24.0.0/16 network that work just fine. As long as your netmasks match, things should be OK.
Is your customer technical enough to be sure their IP addresses are set up properly?
