This comes from the old tradition of the internet, where tools were
designed with a global view in mind. The new internet is market, and
therefore wants driven, and such tools are, I believe, commonly available
for Windows.
Other examples are that the trn newsreader tries to discourage posting,
whereas a Windows reader that makes it difficult to post wouldn't sell well.
(I do sympathise a lot with the old view.)
